SPRING CLEAN: Your Healthy & Non-Toxic Guide - 11 Steps to Deep Clean and Organize Your Home for Spring

Spring is on the horizon, and as the days grow longer and brighter, it's time to prepare for spring cleaning! Here is your guide to freshening up with non-toxic tips. If you’re like me, spring can’t come soon enough, so here’s some inspiration and planning tips to begin the annual ritual of spring cleaning.

1. Get Organized First

Before diving into your spring cleaning journey, it's important to get organized! Start by gathering all the necessary nature-friendly cleaning products and tools (see below for tips on this!), ensuring you have everything you need. Additionally, using a checklist can help you stay focused and track your progress throughout the cleaning process. We have the ULTIMATE SPRING CLEANING CHECKLIST for you to download for free. This will help you prioritize tasks and ensure nothing is overlooked! 2. Declutter Mindfully

Now is a great time to mindfully declutter your living space and let go of items that no longer serve a purpose. Donate or recycle gently used clothes, books, and household items instead of throwing them out. You can declutter your wardrobe, your pantry, toy boxes, personal care products, kitchen cupboards, book shelves, office storage areas and those miscellaneous junk drawers that may have turned into a dumping ground for clutter.

3. Remove your Shoes

There are real risks to wearing your outdoor shoes indoors by exposing you to harmful bacteria, chemicals, and allergens including clostridium difficile (c-diff), staphylococcus, e-coli, feces, pesticides and mold. Young children and pets, who spend a lot of time on the floor, are especially vulnerable to ingesting bacteria or chemicals from outdoor shoes. Wearing indoor slippers or shoes designated solely for indoor use will help protect your health and theirs.

4. Use Natural Cleaning Products:

Swap out toxic chemical cleaners for natural alternatives that are gentle on both your home and the environment. Look for companies that use plant-based, non-toxic ingredients like vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils, which are effective without leaving behind harmful residues. Consider making your own cleaning products. Check out Deliciously Raw and Nature’s Nurture from some amazing DIY homemade recipes.

5. Give Everything a Wash!

Spring time is the perfect time to wash items such as tablecloths, placemats, pillow covers and pillows, curtains, area rugs, bath mats, make-up and hair brushes. These items collect and trap dirt, debris, sweat, oil, spills, dust, bacteria and odors. Your spring cleaning checklist for all rooms include window sills and window tracks, walls, floors, baseboards, door frames, light switches and light fixtures.

6. Disinfect with Steam

Use a steam cleaner to deep clean instead of using toxic detergents filled with chemicals. The high heat from steam is effective in naturally sanitizing by killing many types of bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Steam can be used on a variety of surfaces, including hard floors, tile grout, countertops, upholstery, and bathroom fixtures. Your home will be sparkling clean and toxin-free.

7. Choose Reusable Cleaning Supplies

When possible, choose to use cotton cloths, rags and eco-friendly scrub brushes. Say no to disposable wipes, mop pads, sponges, paper towels and plastic bags. Reusable cleaning supplies are better for nature and will help you save money in the long run.

8. Take a Breath of Fresh Air

Open up your windows and fill your living space with crisp, spring fresh air. This will leave your space rejuvenated and help remove lingering winter odors. Improving air quality can also involve adding houseplants to help purify the air naturally. If you have pets, research safe options and ensure that any plants you bring indoors are non-toxic to your beloved pets.

9. Embrace Natural Fragrances

Say goodbye to toxic, synthetic air fresheners and candles, and look for natural fragrance alternatives. Consider making a simmering pot infused with citrus peels or fresh herbs. Diffusers with your favorite essential oil blends (ensure they are kid and pet friendly) are a non-toxic way to improve your mood, promote relaxation, and purify the air.

10. Deep Clean Appliances

To prepare for spring cleaning, it's essential to clear out and clean the fridge and freezer. Additionally, you can give other appliances like the oven, toaster, blender, kettle, coffee machine, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer a good clean. Some need a deep cleaning, filters included, to maintain their performance, remove bacteria and odors, and prolong their lifespan.

11. Opt for Sustainable, Non-Toxic Storage Solutions

Organize your belongings with sustainable storage solutions such as wooden bins, woven baskets, and recycled glass jars. Not only are these options beautiful, but they also help reduce clutter and promote a sense of calm and order in your living space. Use glass and stainless steel, lead-free ceramic and silicone for food storage. Avoid using plastic containers with BPA and plastic wrap; they release harmful chemicals and contribute to plastic pollution.
